Overview

Flutrr is a conversation first dating app designed to help people discover meaningful relationships beyond superficial swiping. By combining curated daily connections, collaborative questions, progressive profile reveals, and compatibility features, the app encourages users to understand each other before making a decision to connect.

The product brings together intentional matchmaking, social discovery, and communication features in a single experience, helping users move from initial curiosity to more meaningful conversations.

The Problem

Traditional dating apps often prioritise profile photos and rapid decisions over meaningful interaction. Endless swiping can make partner discovery feel repetitive, while limited context about another person makes it difficult to identify genuine compatibility.

Flutrr approaches this challenge differently. Instead of encouraging users to evaluate an endless stream of profiles, the experience focuses on fewer, more considered connections, giving users a reason to engage before deciding whether to take the relationship further.

The Approach

I approached Flutrr by designing the experience around intentional discovery rather than volume. Curated daily connections and collaborative questions encourage users to participate in the matching process, while progressive profile reveals create a natural transition from initial interaction to mutual discovery.

Beyond matching, I designed the broader experience around features that help connections develop. Moments introduces a social discovery layer where users can share and explore everyday experiences. Structured chat limits encourage more deliberate engagement, while time sensitive conversations create a clear reason to continue interacting. Astrology insights and compatibility scores offer an additional way for users to explore their potential connection.

The Results

  • A distinctive matching experience built around conversation rather than endless swiping
  • A social discovery experience that extends beyond static dating profiles through Moments
  • Clearer communication states through active chat limits, waiting connections, and time sensitive conversations
  • Additional compatibility discovery through astrology insights and relationship compatibility scores

What I'd Do Differently

I'd validate the relationship between curated discovery and actual compatibility earlier. While limiting the number of choices can encourage more deliberate decisions, I'd test how users respond to daily recommendations and whether the matching process consistently gives them enough context to continue.

I'd also evaluate the impact of chat limits and time sensitive conversations on relationship quality. These mechanics can encourage users to engage, but I'd want to understand whether they help conversations progress naturally or introduce unnecessary pressure. That evidence would guide how connection limits, reminders, and chat revival should work together.

What I Learned

Reducing choice can make discovery more intentional, but fewer options alone do not guarantee better connections. The value comes from giving users enough context and meaningful interaction to make informed decisions.

Supporting a relationship requires more than a matching algorithm. Moments, communication tools, and compatibility insights serve different purposes across the user journey, and each feature needs to contribute to a coherent experience rather than exist as an isolated addition.

Engagement mechanics must serve the user's goals. Chat limits and time sensitive interactions can encourage participation, but their success should be evaluated by the quality and continuity of conversations, not simply by how often users return to the app.
